The stage where the operator gets built.
Most of the architectural decisions about the kind of founder you'll be at Series B are made right now, under pressure, usually without anyone naming them. The work at this stage is about making those decisions on purpose.
What this stage actually looks like
You are doing three jobs at once and none of them well by the standards you had before you started the company. Your identity and the company's identity are fusing in ways you can't always tell apart. You raised on a story that was mostly true when you pitched it and is becoming less true every week.
Some version of the following is probably on your plate:
- You are hiring your first executives, who in many cases have more operating experience than you and who you now have to lead.
- Your co-founder relationship is drifting in small ways that are easy to ignore right up until they aren't.
- You are learning what you are actually afraid of, usually at three in the morning, and you have no particular interest in a board seeing it.
- You are saying yes to things you used to say no to and no to things you used to say yes to, and you're not sure what the pattern is.
- You are tired in a way that doesn't respond to sleep.
What the work looks like with us
We don't come in with a founder development curriculum. We come in and read the code with you: the patterns in how you hire, how you delay hard conversations, which of your instincts are load-bearing and which are a workaround from a previous life. We name what we see and stay with it long enough for you to do something with it.
At this stage, most clients need two things. First, a room to think in, because the board isn't that room and the co-founder isn't that room and nobody on the team can be. Second, someone whose pattern recognition is already good enough that you don't have to re-explain your situation every time it shifts.
Who's likely to match
We take on pre-seed and seed founders who are already operating at a serious level, who have self-awareness that they want to deepen rather than acquire from scratch, and who can hold the tension between moving fast and looking at themselves honestly without collapsing either one.
We are not the right fit if what you want is a cheerleader, a tactical chief-of-staff substitute, or someone to tell you what to do. We will tell you what we see. The decisions stay yours.
The engagement
An open-ended engagement billed quarterly, matched to a coach based on fit. If the senior team work needs the other coaches in the room at some point, they are. We set the rate to the stage the company is at, and share it during the discovery call. Full shape on the FAQ page.
